where the color should be.

The past year has left me drained of extra energy (and creativity too, it seems). Even though there are very good reasons for that, something needs to change. Because I've realized that in order to really feel like myself I need to be creating, exploring, making an extra effort to notice and share the beauty all around — in whatever forms that may be.

I really believe that creativity needs to be worked on just like anything else, and that it comes easier with practice. So right now I'm brainstorming ways to help myself in that area — perhaps a daily exercise of sorts?

A favorite find: my beautiful colored pencils from the new Kid Made Modern line at Target. They got me thinking about how excited I am for Margo to grow up and work on little art projects with me. I sure hope she gets my love for art and color.

  7. I love the idea of doing a daily drawing or painting to get your creativity flowing! I feel the same, I'm not completely happy if it has been too long since I've done something creative!

  8. These colored pencils are so pretty, go Target!

Man, I just typed out this whole long comment about "creativity" and then deleted it because it made zero sense. Haha! We DO need to have lunch so we can just talk this stuff out. :)

  9. I was going to suggest the 30 days of creativity too! That's an awesome way to jump start your creativity. And I think we had babies close-ish together- Feb 13th is when my son was born. And my writing/creative brain is just starting to come online. It was off from the moment I got pregnant until just after he turned 3 months. It's frustrating & I felt like I "lost" myself too. But just know you are doing all the right things & it WILL come back!

  10. I find your lovely + simple photos to be great inspiration! I love the ideas that people are posting about following a creative challenge (daily, weekly, or something) and sharing it

  12. I understand your mild frustration of feeling a creative void, but i can assure you this is also mildly temporary, as your baby grows and becomes more independent, you'll feel all your pieces coming back together again. Just be patient but don't stop creating either.

  13. I feel the same way, Angela! A friend and I are forcing ourselves to write every week this summer - I think the accountability piece will be key; otherwise I am too likely put creativity on the back burner in lieu of other responsibilities. Maybe something like that would help you as well?

I hope you are doing so well and enjoying your beautiful babe.

  15. It is hard with little ones, but so good that you realize the importance of maintaining your identity and talents as a mother. I teach myself piano pieces regularly and have even brushed up on old forgotten ones from high school. It's all I can do to stay sane!

  16. Elder Utchdorf gave a talk several years ago about creativity. He said the closer we are to the spirit, the more creativity will flow from us. I know this is true because I have been working hard at reading my scriptures this year, and ideas are coming to me all the time, like never before.

  17. I saw all of the goodies within this line that came out in Target. I stood there in the isle and dreamed about pencils for probably....10 minutes...lol. I agree! I did some crafting last week (instead of being on the computer all night) and it felt SO GOOD!

  20. Angela, I've realized the same thing recently (that I haven't created enough, yet I need to do it to feel like "me"); I wrote a post about it last month with some tips to jumpstart creativity. Maybe something will jump out at you?

  21. You have made me want these colored pencils. The power you and your photography have. Good luck in your creative ventures. And to just put this out there, I didn't really feel like myself again until Ellie was a year. Not that I wasn't me, but I too did not have my energy or creativity. Give yourself some space to just survive and maintain.

  24. I feel exactly the same way. & having fairly recently becoming a mum too, I am feeling the need to make things more than ever yet it's hard to find the time though when you're devoting your life to a lil'un isn't it?! (your little lady is divine by the way!) Good luck in your creative pursuits and know that they will always be in there even if they are less frequent for awhile!
