nothing really holds a candle to you.

Margo's first birthday party couldn't have been better. With family gathered around our home to celebrate and dote on her, she was absolutely content the whole time. I did my best to keep things simple with good food and a few decorations — pompoms, cupcake toppers with a mugshot of that chubby round face, and oversized B&W photos hanging around (I still haven't taken down that poster).

She was very serious and enthralled while opening her presents. And even though my cake-making skills proved to be subpar, naturally she loved all that sugar. After several minutes of licking frosting off fingertips and then double-fisting the cake into her mouth, she started reaching out to share with her cousins sitting around. As they joined in to eat a little cake themselves I couldn't help but watch and think how lucky this girl is to have such incredible, loving family in her life. It was definitely a sweet moment — and a really great day.

  1. I love her round chubby face popping out of the cupcakes. Every time I see the picture I took on my phone of it, I smile.

We need to hang out more.

    1. thanks for the compliments!

the b&w collage is just a large format b/w print i had printed at staples for like $6! (i designed it first in photoshop but you could use any kind of collage program).

happy birthday banner was cut out by hand...

and the shirt is from old navy :)

    2. I love that collage print! My daughter's first birthday/party is next weekend & that's such a neat idea! You said you created the collage yourself in Photoshop so if you don't mind me asking -- what size did you create it as? Image size & DPI?

I have no experience printing through Staples so I appreciate any input. Thanks!!

    3. i wasn't really sure either but my file size was about 25x33 (I scaled it down from 36x48) at 300dpi. however, when i went to get it printed they were having trouble getting it to work and i think it's because it was too big / too high resolution. they ended up converting it to a PDF to make it print.

in short, you may just want to give them a call and see their recommendation ;)

  22. It is so cute that Margo actually dug into that cake! I shot a smash the cake shoot not too long ago and the little one (just over 1 years old) got really weirded out by it and wouldn't dig into the cake at all. She patted it though. Hahahaha. Kids are so cute. And Margo might just be the cutest!
